ABSTRACT

Organic farming is gaining importance in recent years all over the globe. Promotion of organic farming is viewed as a farming practice with distinct advantage of sustainability of crop production, protection against deteriorating natural resources like soil, water, etc. and also as an economic venture. Organic agriculture is a holistic production management system which promotes and enhances agro-ecosystem health including bio-diversity, biological cycles and soil biological activity. The basic rules of organic production approve the use of natural inputs, while synthetic inputs are prohibited.

Organic farming is necessary from the point of economic, environment, and social concerns. Green revolution increased the crop yields to attain self sufficiency in food production by use of high external input techniques. Continuous use of off-farm resources affected the soil health and productivity, soil erosion, air and water pollution etc. As land becomes unproductive, rural depopulation occurs which may further reduce the productivity. In view of this, the organic systems or component technologies have to be promoted to stabilize soils, reduce environmental damage and for cohesiveness of society and sustainability of crop production.

The product produced globally as organic farming agriculture include cotton, rice, herbs, spices, tea, coffee, vegetables, honey, lemons, dried fruits, nuts, etc. which have premium market.

Organic farming management relies on developing biological diversity in the field to disrupt habitat for pest organisms, and the purposeful maintenance and replenishment of soil fertility. Dissemination of technology and information on how-to-go-about especially for a new practice/system through an expert system, to the farmers at village level, is the present day need.
